Updated 2013 digital maps for the UK

GfK GeoMarketing's newly overhauled digital maps comprise the basis for geomarketing applications in sales, marketing and expansion endeavors. The maps reflect all regional changes that occurred over the past year and thus provide a reliable basis for geocoding company data and market potential.

GfK has updated its 15 digital maps for the United Kingdom to reflect the latest status. The new maps reflect all postal and administrative changes that occurred since the last update. The new map edition features coverage of all official postal and administrative entities as well as supplementary topographic details.

Digital maps featuring postal and administrative boundaries (e.g., counties and municipalities) form the foundation for software-based analyses with a geographic component in geomarketing, GIS, ERP and other database applications.

Updates

  • All map layers have been updated and newly digitized at a scale of 1:10,000 using the latest sources and satellite/aerial imagery. The scale of the new maps corresponds to 1:5,000 in urban areas and up to 1:25,000 in rural regions. This means that the maps are now accurate to within a distance of mere meters.
  • The map of the country's approximately 9,500 postcode sectors has been completely re-digitized: Boundaries are rendered at the level of streets and thus offer extremely high accuracy.
  • For the first time, the new map edition includes a layer illustrating the 1.6 mil. "postcode unit points" based on data from Ordnance Survey. The layer can be used to match bulk postal customers and post-office boxes with their assigned postcodes.
  • GfK also completely overhauled and updated its topographic maps on the basis of Ordnance Survey data; these include coverage of motorways, highways and bodies of water, among other elements.
  • All postcode, administrative and topographic maps fit together seamlessly without gaps or overlaps and reflect the latest official status. Sources used to update the maps include Ordnance Survey and Royal Mail, among others.
"Prior to the Ordnance Survey data becoming an open data source, it was very difficult and expensive to create good maps for the United Kingdom," explains Klaus Dittmann, head of cartography at GfK GeoMarketing.

"Now there is a top-notch source available, which can also be accessed by the public. However, making use of this data requires an immense amount of work due to its gigantic size. To create our GfK postcode maps, we used additional sources such as postcode lists from Royal Mail as well as street data. Handling and preparing the data for geomarketing applications and location-based analyses requires a high level of cartographic expertise. Our new map edition for the United Kingdom features an unprecedented level of precision thanks to the first-rate source data we had at our disposal."

Applications

Digital maps play an essential role in international expansion and sales territory planning, serving as an indispensable component of geomarketing software and geographic information systems (GIS). These software applications are used to analyze and display the geographic component of company and market data on digital maps.

Coverage, quality, format

The high-quality maps included in the edition feature comprehensive coverage; gapless, overlap-free boundaries; national and local attributions and infinite zoom capability.

Like all digital maps by GfK, the new GfK United Kingdom Map Edition is available in all standard digital map formats, including *.shp (ESRI), *.tab (MapInfo), *.gdb (GeoDatabase) and *.lay (GfK). The maps are also available in the Oracle (Spatial) database format for use in Oracle Business Intelligence applications.

These maps are part of GfK’s worldwide cartographic coverage, which comprises the largest collection of digital administrative and postcode maps available on the market.
